Integrated Pest Management Solutions
After many months with a persistent rodent problem, a large baking company needed our help. Using the principals of Integrated Pest Management and the understanding of the biology and behaviour of rodents, we worked together with the company and the contracted pest control company to put together a combination of rodent control strategies to address the reasons why the rodents were there. At the same time we created a highly functional food safety team that had the tools to be able to proactively manage this pest problem and prevent others from occurring.
Food Safety Leadership Development
A food manufacturing company had recently undertaken a regional product recall due to foreign material. Prior to the recall the company had been experiencing a significant increase in food safety customer complaints specifically related to foreign matter. Although the company had achieved certification in one of the recognized GFSI schemes, recent customer and independent third party inspections had identified significant gaps in their food safety programs.
The company had a new Plant Manager that was committed to continuous improvement and had begun implementing processes to reduce their customer complaints. However, the company’s main customer was considering moving to an alternative supplier if they were not able to show significant and sustainable improvements to their food safety programs. The company had a strong brand presence and was concerned that their brand image was being tarnished. Another recall or loss of key customers could spell disaster for the company.
Through discussions and subsequent gap assessments it was found that the company had a weak food safety culture. In addition a lack of true understanding of customer needs and expectations, as well as food safety leaders that were focused more on compliance than truly supporting food safety was identified. We addressed these gaps through tailored coaching and 1-1 mentoring of key food safety leaders to ensure they truly understood not only what change was required but why it was required. We were able to strengthen the food safety culture and develop food safety champions. The key takeaway from this experience was that the company had all the foreign material control devices they needed and they did not need to invest in additional equipment. What they did do was invest in their leaders and people, which created a sustainable culture, strengthened their brand and provided confidence to their customers that they could sustain this change in the long term.
